I'd like to think that my daughter is a pretty smart kid. When she was 6 months old I started teaching her sign language. Every time I gave her milk I signed "milk" and every time daddy came home I signed "daddy". It wasn't until she turned one that she did her first sign. Of course it was "milk", simple and easy. And her signing just grew from there; she can now sign over fifty words. Not perfectly mind you but enough to be understood. And let me tell you how nice it was to be able to know what she wanted by her signing. Of course she was also learning to talk but it was gibberish and most of the times it was frustrating not knowing what she was saying. When she was about 15 months she could imitate a ton of animal sounds and when she was 16 months knew her body parts. Now that she's almost 20 months we're learning ABC's and 123's. A couple of weeks ago she counted to 10 all by herself! Every night Ayla insists we read "Ten Little Lady Bugs" and insists I count the lady bugs. It's her FAVORITE book! One night I was reading it to her and started pointing at the lady bugs to count them and to my amazement she counted them for me. I made her do it a few times just to be sure I was hearing her right. So I thought it was time to move right on over to the alphabet. I bought some books and thought we would start with ABCD & E. She quickly picked up those letters and then I thought why not see if she can pick up the sign language version and she did. So now she can pretty much go through the entire alphabet. Of course she needs a little help every now and then especially when eating a red vine but I'm thinking this fall she'll be all set for kindergarten. They do accept geniuses right?!
